My favourite part of the home design process is helping my customers to elevate their new space even further with easy finishing touches and styling tips to make their home look the best it possibly can.

Andrea – John Lewis Home Designer
I have always been obsessed with good design. My background in interiors and architecture, and owning my own interiors shop has given me a good grounding in interior design.
For me, good lighting and flooring are the basis of a well designed room, and I find it really rewarding when I can work with a customer, and use my design skills and eye for colour, to create a beautiful bespoke design that reflects both their lifestyle and personality.
How would you approach a dark space that barely gets any natural light?
Lighting is key – layer it with bright task lights, overhead lights controlled by a dimmer switch to create warm ambient light in an evening and also dot around table and floor lamps to add warmth to dark corners. Keeping the flooring light gives the illusion of space, and another tip is to not block what little natural light there is with curtains in heavy fabrics, instead opt for sheer voile panels, linen or cotton fabrics.
If you are scared to introduce colour into your home, where should you start?
Adding colour pops will breathe life into a lacklustre room by giving it vibrancy, depth and personality. Start small, introduce colour gradually with either an accent wall or accessories. You could start with adding subtle pastel shades which will add colour in a muted way and not overpower the room – use pale blues and greens, pale pinks and lilacs. Or you can choose bright contrasting shades of colour and bold patterns to add vibrancy. Colour and texture can also be added with glass vases, lampshades, art work, rugs, throws and cushions.
What the Designers think:
Thalia: The addition of an artwork here has multiple benefits, it helps to zone the space, provides a focal point and subtly introduces colour too.
Andrea: The star of the show for me, is the textured rustic rug, which on a practical note softens the effect of the hard flooring and absorbs sound, but also adds texture, pattern and hints of colour that compliment and anchor the rest of the room.
Laiba: The contrasting texture, introduced in the form of glass pendant lights above the wooden dining table, has created a visual balance while the large, natural plant has instantly added a fresh feel and contrasting colour to the room.
